Our mission

Make informed solar decisions possible for more people.

We want trustworthy, practical information about solar energy to be easier to access and understand.

Solar Chat is designed to turn complex questions into a useful conversation—so people can understand their options, ask better questions and take their next step with greater confidence.

Why Solar Chat

Good decisions begin with information people can actually use.

01

Start with the question

People do not need another technical manual. They need space to ask what matters in their own words.

02

Make complexity clearer

We aim to translate technical ideas into practical guidance without hiding uncertainty or important limits.

03

Keep context at the centre

Useful guidance must reflect real needs, constraints and the settings in which energy decisions are made.

What we are working towards

Four goals guide the work.

These are commitments for how Solar Chat is being developed—not claims of impact already achieved.

Expand access

Make reliable solar knowledge easier to reach through a low-friction chat experience.

Support better-informed choices

Help people understand trade-offs, prepare useful questions and evaluate possible next steps.

Respond to real contexts

Develop guidance around users' circumstances rather than assuming one solar solution fits everyone.

Learn responsibly

Improve through research and feedback while being open about what the service can—and cannot—do.

The idea

A useful next step, one conversation at a time.

  1. 1

    Ask

Begin with a solar question in everyday language.

  2. 2

    Understand

Work through needs, terms and trade-offs in a clear exchange.

  3. 3

    Decide

Use the guidance to prepare for a more informed next step.

Designed in cooperation

Research insight meets inclusive innovation.

Solar Chat is being developed through collaboration between researchers at the University of Cambridge and colleagues at the Centre for Global Equality.

The work brings research perspectives together with CGE's established approach to inclusive, context-appropriate innovation for sustainable development.

CGE is an independent UK civil-society organisation and registered charity. References to the University of Cambridge identify the affiliation of participating researchers only and do not indicate formal endorsement by the University.

Trust through clarity

Helpful guidance has limits. We should state them plainly.

Solar Chat is an information service in development. Its responses are intended to help people understand solar topics; they are not a substitute for a qualified installer's site assessment, engineering advice or financial advice.

  • We distinguish development goals from proven impact.
  • We explain uncertainty and avoid invented precision.
  • We are working toward clear, responsible data practices.
